What is a facial?

A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable Esthetician. Facials clean, exfoliate and nourish the skin, promoting a clear, hydrated complexion, and can help improve and maintain a youthful appearance.

A facial will provide the best results when it is a part of an on-going skincare program, including regular facial treatments as well as at-home care. Facial treatments can include a variety of actions, including cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, facial masks, peels and massage.

1

Why do people need facials?

  • Facials can actually clear your pores. A professional treatment will cleanse your skin in a way that you simply cannot achieve at home.
  • If your skin is behaving badly, you’ll find out why. Your skin can and will change over time, this can vary depending on age, weather and even hormones. It is always a good idea to have a licensed Esthetician help you to address those changes, identify the potential reason and to educate you on how to treat those concerns. If you have great skin now, don’t trust that it will last forever. For example, many people suffer from eczema in the winter and will simply blame dryness. Not treating a serious condition such as this can lead to long-term damage!
  • You can get extractions done the right way. Don’t lie, we know you do it, but every time you squeeze a pimple you are risking acne scarring and dark marks. Extractions done regularly by an Esthetician will help keep your skin to stay clear. It will also help prevent long-term damage that you might be causing by doing it yourself at home. You may even find that receiving regular facials will eliminate any reason to pop or pick at any blemishes. Facial are an essential step to preventing imperfections.
  • Facials are better than a visit to the beauty counter. You know when you go to a department store and someone tells you what to buy based on looking at your skin under fluorescent lights? This is not how you should be purchasing your skincare items. A knowledgeable, licensed Esthetician will provide you with personalized skin recommendations and a regimen that will address your individual concerns. The best way for anyone to make suitable recommendations for your skin is to examine your bare skin after it has been cleansed. Once you’re on the appropriate regimen, your Esthetician should update it seasonally as your skin changes. It’s like having your own skin concierge!
  • You’ll find your happy place. Facials are so much more relaxing than any DIY project you try on your skin at home. At Fountains many facials include a mix of high frequency, massage and hot towels, all to maximize the pampering experience. Stress can highly contribute to skin issues; therefore a facial can improve not only breakouts, but it can also give you a reason to take a few deep, cleansing breaths, and relax.

MicroDermabrasion

How often should people get facials?

The frequency in which a person receives facials depends on several factors, your skin type, condition, skincare goals, age, even where you live. On average, getting a facial by a professional once a month is ideal for someone who wants to maintain healthy looking skin.

It’s important to remember that the skin is a living organ, and because of that it goes through a type of shedding process. It takes about 30 days for skin cells to move up from the dermis (deeper layers of skin) to the epidermis (surface skin). Once the cells reach the surface, they flatten out, die, and stay right there on the surface of your skin. A facial simulates the exfoliation process, keeping the skin more toned and youthful looking. At a minimum a person should try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes.

Everyone Is Getting Microdermabrasions…Even Statues

A few months ago, I read a newspaper article about how the Ulysses S. Grant bronze memorial, after 93 years is undergoing a month long restoration to remove a massive buildup of bronze patina deposits, rust, dirt and grime. “Weary. Sick. Beleaguered.” is how they described the monument’s condition.

What does the U.S. Grant Memorial have to do with Microdermabrasion? One of the main techniques they are using for the restoration is sandblasting — shooting streams of sand under pressure, which cuts through the grime and abrades the surface, leaving it as smooth and clean as it was 93 years ago. That basic concept for our purposes –applying a crystalline material known as aluminum oxide — is how microdermabrasion smoothes and refines the texture of the skin.

What is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an effective way to diminish acne scarring, large pores, fine lines, and hyper pigmentation (sun damage) by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. Other benefits include boosting the cellular renewal rate and stimulating collagen production–both of which are key elements of youthful radiant, firm skin.

There are many degrees of intensity when it comes to exfoliation. The exfoliation you do at home is very mild. Microdermabrasion is much more aggressive, although not nearly as aggressive as some of the medical grade chemical peels, usually administered in a doctor’s office. One might think that microdermabrasion would be painful, but the vast majority of clients who get microdermabrasion do not feel even the slightest amount of pain. This is because the machine has intensity settings which allows the Esthetician to apply a lighter touch for more sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion has been performed in the U.S. for about twenty years and in Europe for 35 years. It was developed as an alternative to a much more aggressive (and painful) treatment simply called, Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion often required an anesthetic and left the skin extremely irritated and swollen for several weeks. Microdermabrasion avoids these negative effects. In fact, microdermabrasion is often referred to as a “lunchtime peel” because there is no down time — you can get the treatment on your lunch hour and return to work with radiant, glowing skin!

Microdermabrasion

Who Should Avoid Microdermabrasion

Although most people are good candidates for microdermabrasion, it is not for everyone. If any of the following conditions are present, we would not recommend microdermabrasion:

• Extremely Sensitive skin; moderate to severe rosacea
• Large amounts of broken capillaries, also known as Couperosis
• Severe acne, characterized mainly by pustules and inflammation (wet acne)
• Autoimmune disorders
• Eczema
• Dermatitis
• Diabetes
• Psoriasis
• Lupus
• Recent Laser treatments or cosmetic injections
• Use of Accutane within the past year (a very strong acne medication with significant side effects)
• Use of highly concentrated Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) within the past month
• Use of Vitamin A derivatives such as Retin-A, Renova, or Differin within the past month

We ask new facial clients to complete a questionnaire which will give us more insight as to whether you would be a good fit for microdermabrasion. We also have a brief consultation before performing a microdermabrasion treatment.

Microdermabrasion Results

It is important to note that microdermabrasion will not result in perfect skin. Deep wrinkling, severe scarring and severe hyper pigmentation can be diminished, but we don’t want to give you the impression that these conditions will disappear with a single microdermabrasion treatment. We always see improvement in the skin, even after one treatment, but the degree of improvement will vary with each person. For maximum results, we recommend a series of six treatments to be performed 10-14 days within each session. This six treatment series can be done up to three times a year.

Another key consideration is that microdermabrasion makes the skin more vulnerable to the effects of the sun. For those who spend lots of time outside during the summer — at the beach, pool, on a boat, or on the golf course, we recommend holding off on microdermabrasion treatments during the summer. Now that fall is here, it’s the perfect time for getting a microdermabrasion treatment. But even during the cooler months, it is extremely important to still use a sun block to protect the skin and maximize the results. Applying a moisturizer three times a day for the four days after microdermabrasion will minimize any drying effects as a result of microdermabrasion.

MicroDermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is also popular with people who don’t really have conditions that they wish to correct — they simply want to maintain healthy, smooth, glowing skin. These people will often do a microdermabrasion treatment, every few months as an alternative to our traditional Guinot facials.

We welcome any questions you may have about microdermabrasion.

Guinot’s New Double Ionisation Hydradermie

Blog Author: Suzanne Olsen

Finally we are ready to introduce Guinot’s brand new Double Ionisation Hydradermie Facial to Fountains’ clients. For those of you who love the results with the original Hydradermie, get ready to be blown away with the new treatment. We are one of the first Spas in the USA to receive our Double Ionisation Hydradermie Machine. We are now offering two levels for all of our Hydradermie Facials. We will still offer the Original, Super and Ultra Hydradermie, however if you would like to enhance any of these facials, you can do so by requesting Double Ionisation.

The Standard Hydradermie

The Hydradermie is a facial that has been around for decades and our clients love it. A key factor of this facial is that it uses direct and indirect galvanic current. During the facial, your beauty therapist hands you the negative metal rod as they pass positively-charged rollers over your skin. The negative metal rod in your hand actually attracts and pulls the positive ions from the rollers deeper into your skin as they glide over the face. This process allows the active ingredients contained in the Guinot Gels to nourish and hydrate the dermis and epidermis (outer layer) at the same time relaxing the tiny muscle that holds the pore closed enabling the therapist to perform extractions with ease. Once the skin has been deep cleansed the second and very important part of the facial begins.

With the skin clean and the pores open we bathe the skin in oxygen, giving life to the cells. This part is so important no matter the age or skin type. A relaxing facial massage is given before the final step, the individual face mask chosen for your skin type.

DoubleIonHydra

The Double Ionisation Hydradermie

With Double Ionisation the effect of the current is dispersed directly on the surface of the skin, sending the super food gels (rich in calcium potassium and algae minerals) deeper into the skin, providing you with greater longer lasting results. The Double Ionisation Hydradermie will take the same amount of time as the Hydradermie, however there is no longer a need to hold the negative metal rod. Instead of the client holding it, in the new treatment the Esthetician holds both the positive and negative currents in their hand and use them both simultaneously directly on the skin. By having both the negative and positive electrodes pass over the skin at the same time (Double Ionisation) the client is receiving double the benefits, compared to the standard Hydradermie. The positive current helps the nutrients of the treatment gels to go further into the skin, while the negative current is pulling impurities out.

The treatment gels that are used during the facial are formulated to deliver deeper nutrients to the core cells, thus increasing the lifespan of that cell while also aiding the negative current to pull out impurities at the same time, making pore cleansing more effective. Compared to the results or the original Hydradermie, the Double Ionization provides more visible and longer lasting results.

DoubleIOnHydra2

To Sum It Up

The Double Ionisation reaches deeper, enabling the gels to perform more effectively than ever before. Bringing your skin instant radiance as well as hydration. Since the gels are penetrating deeper into the skin, the core cell’s life span and productivity are increased, in other words, you skin cell will live longer and become stronger. I really am excited to have you experience the new double ionization hydradermie and see for yourself what a difference just one treatment makes.

Summer is a great time to indulge your skin, I like doing this with a mask. Guinot has three travel size masks, and they are all amazing. The Anti Fatigue Mask is great for perking up and brightening dull skin, especially during and after flying. It contains cold essential oils such as eucalyptus and mint to refresh and bring your skin back to life. Mask Hydra Beaute is also a wonderful mask. If you have dry or dehydrated skin, this mask will bathe your skin in relaxing moisture, giving you back your summer glow. The last travel mask that Guinot has is Mask Vital Antirides, this is ideal for mature skin. It erases signs of fatigue and reinforces skin elasticity.

The Longue Vie Mains is a great hand cream to keep in your purse or car. It makes your hands feel smooth and moisturized, but never greasy. It also helps with fading mild hyper pigmentation on the backs of hands, cause no one wants sun spots.

Travel size creme hydra beaute

Our Creme Hydra Beaute is a very moisturizing yet light cream. It’s perfect for summer weather since it doesn’t feel like you have a heavy layer of moisturizer on your face.

travel size hydra tendre

Hydra Tendre cleansing cream is one of our most popular cleansers, and my personal favorite at the moment. It makes so much sense for this to come in a travel size. This cleanser is gentle yet works wonders for skin that gets oily in the summertime. With the main active ingredient being Aloe Vera Extract it leaves skin feeling revived and refreshed.

Travel size Gommage Grain

One important thing to remember is the summer is to exfoliate your skin on a weekly basis. Between makeup and moisturizers, sunscreen and pollution, your skin has a lot built up on the surface. For those of you who have sensitive skin or don’t like the traditional grainy exfoliators, try the Gommage Biologique. This is an exfoliating peeling gel that helps remove dead skin cells with AHAs. If you’re more into traditional grainy exfoliators, then check out Gommage Grain, it has microspheres that gently eliminates dead skin cells while smoothing and refining skin’s texture.

I think that this service is one of the most beneficial services that we offer at Fountains Day Spa, because it just makes you feel good, and the results are immediate.

This wrap contains a potent mix of five French seaweeds including, Laminaria, Fucus, Ulva Lactuca, Spirulina and Sea Rocket submerging the body in pure marine actives to stimulate, firm and moisturize the skin of the body. The mud contains ingredients which offer vitamins, iron, iodine, amino acids, lecithin, essential fatty acids, and mucilage, aiding in the overall detoxification. These ingredients work to stimulate the thyroid, promote decongestion and waste elimination, improving skin smoothness, re-balanced, restores proper hydration, and prevents future skin damage by fighting free radicals.

Blackbaltic

After having this treatment your joints and skin feel dramatically different. The seaweed removes toxins from your body, which leaves you feeling rejuvenated and your skin looking amazing! I recommend having this on a regular basis if you are looking to begin a healthy routine. I personally have this service done once a month, and I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in my energy level.  Others may need to have this treatment done more frequently depending on activity level and personal goals.

I see many of my clients who have recognized the benefits of this treatment, and continually come back to have it done. I also see clients getting this wrap before going on a vacation, before military weight ins, and after a rigorous workout routine that has left them feeling achy and sore.

Treatment Spotlight: Hydradermie Facial

Treatment Spotlight: Hydradermie Facial

The Basics to the Hydradermie Facial

Galvanic Current

The Hydradermie begins with a good cleansing and exfoliation, making the skin receptive to the benefits which follow. Next, depending on skin type, condition, and treatment goals, we apply customized treatment gels to the face, neck, and around the eye contourThe treatment gels target dryness, dehydration, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and sensitive skin.

Galvanic Current is then applied to the skin, which initiates two processes known as Ionisation and Disincrustation.  The basic principles of Ionisation are that positive ions are attracted to negative ions, and during this phase, two soothing, electrically charged metal rollers glide over the skin, interacting with the treatment gels and resulting in a deeper and faster penetration of the active ingredients.  The action of the Galvanic Current also softens (disincrusts) blackheads and clogged pores, making extraction of these blackheads easier and more effective.

High Frequency

The next phase of the facial is the High Frequency phase, this helps to oxygenate the skin’s tissues and cells by stimulating circulation and eliminating toxins.  High Frequency is particularly effective in

  • Energizing skin cells that become sluggish with the aging process.
  • Accelerating the healing of blemishes as well as preventing the formation of new ones.

A cream known to us as “OZ-2” is applied to the face and neck.  The OZ-2 has a high concentration of lavender, which enhances the benefits of the High Frequency phase.  Although each phase of the Hydradermie contributes to that post-facial glow and radiance, I believe that the High Frequency phase contributes the most.

Massage & Mask

Next comes a relaxing massage of the neck, shoulders, and facial muscles followed by a facial mask.  In the Hydradermie each phase builds on the previous one, so as we enter the last phase, the skin is even more receptive to a final infusion.  We finish the Hydradermie with an application of a toning lotion to refine the skin’s texture, balance it’s pH, and prepare it for a moisturizer appropriate for the skin type providing additional softening, smoothing, protection and glow.

We would be delighted to answer questions you may have regarding the Hydradermie facial. For a brief video describing the Hydradermie treatment and demonstrating it’s equipment, please refer to the video below.

Who Should Not Get a Hydradermie Facial

The Hydradermie is appropriate for the vast majority of skin types and conditions and provides excellent long-lasting results.  That being said, there are a few circumstances which cause us to recommend other Guinot facials because the electric currents could be too stimulating or uncomfortable.   We generally refrain from performing the Hydradermie if any of the following conditions are present:

  • Pregnancy
  • A significant amount of metal pins or prostheses in the body
  • Pacemaker

Fun Fact: The Hydradermie was first introduced in 1965 and has been performed in every major city in the world for nearly 50 years.

Most people are familiar with the term exfoliation, but are not aware of the many benefits it has or even how to use it to achieve the best results for their skin.

New skin cells are generated in the lower layer, the dermis. And over a period of about 30 days, these cells develop and mature as they move to the surface of the skin. At the end of their journey, they flatten out, die, and become saturated with keratin, which serves as a basic protection to the more delicate layers of the skin. There are several negative effects of this buildup of dead cells, and there are healthier, more esthetic methods of protection.  We always recommend some type of exfoliation routine, depending on individual skin conditions.

June 3rd – June 9th

What is Exfoliation and Why Should I Exfoliate?

This is the process of removing the dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface. The benefits of exfoliation include:

  • Minimizes clogged pores from oil and impurities, thereby minimizing breakouts
  • Results in softer, more radiant and glowing skin.
  • Increases the reproduction rate of skin cells
  • Allows moisturizers, serums, and other treatment creams to penetrate deeper into the skin
  • Creates a more even skin tone, preventing and minimizing the visible effects of sun damage (hyper pigmentation)
  • Exfoliation for men keeps the hair follicles clear which allows for a more effective and less irritating shave
  • Increases the skin’s metabolism, boosting circulation

How is Exfoliation Performed?

There are two basic methods of exfoliation: Mechanical Exfoliation and Chemical Exfoliation. Mechanical methods involve creating friction with some type of abrasive material. Chemical methods generally contain some type of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA), or fruit enzymes, all of which act to loosen or dissolve the substance that holds the dead skin cells together (intercellular cement).

For most skin types, the in-home exfoliator that I recommend is Guinot’s Gommage Grain D’Eclat. It contains polyethylene micro-particles which provide gentle friction to smooth the skin while freeing the pores of dirt and impurities. Another key ingredient is jojoba micro spheres, which act to smooth, soften and moisturize.  For dry skin, I recommend doing a thorough exfoliation once a week; for oily or combination skin, twice per week.

How to use an exfoliator?

For best results, cleanse the skin and pat it dry. Apply a thin layer to the entire face and neck, avoiding the contour of the eyes. Let it sit on the face for about ten minutes. During this time, excess oil and impurities are absorbed by kaolin and the cream will begin to dry. Once it has completely dried, gently rub the cream with your fingers in circular motions over a sink. Allow the small particles to fall off your face and into the sink. Once most of the product has come off, rinse off any excess and follow with a toner/moisturizer.

Some things to keep in mind regarding exfoliation:

  • While many exfoliants on the market can dry and irritate the skin, Gommage Grain D’Eclat is gentle enough to ensure that these negative effects do not occur.
  • Avoid exfoliating while in the shower, because the exfoliating cream will not dry sufficiently for the necessary friction to occur.
  • Gommage Grain D’Eclat is appropriate for most skin types. For those with extremely sensitive skin, Gommage Biologique would be an excellent alternative. And for those with moderate to extreme acneic conditions, even gentle rubbing/friction is not recommended. For these conditions, the Pure Balance Mask is recommended.
  • After exfoliation, the skin is very receptive to the nourishing, hydrating, and stimulating ingredients of a facial mask. Applying a mask after exfoliating is a great way to enhance the effects of your exfoliator, giving the skin more radiance, glow, and energy!

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding exfoliation or any other type of skin care issue.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the skin’s natural process for shedding dead skin cells is known as desquamation? This type of shedding however is uneven and incomplete, so we use exfoliation techniques to accelerate desquamation and give us optimal results!

Guinot Mask Dynamisant Anti-Fatigue

Guinot Masque Dynamisant Anti-Fatigue Mask

Ideal Skin Type: All Skin

Guest Blogger: Audrey Griffin

Guinot’s Instant Radiance Face Mask (Dynamisant Anti-Fatigue) helps to achieve many beneficial results for your skin. This mask renews the skin’s radiance, while also revitalizing and smoothing your features. A combination of cold essential oils, AHA Complex, Dynalift, Lift Firming Complex, and Hydrocyte Complex work together to make the Instant Radiance Mask a truly unique product. This product is perfect to use on the day of big event because it makes the skin appear visibly healthier instantly.

Check out a video on how to use this mask by clicking the link below.

I would like to discuss just how the key active ingredients in the Instant Radiance Mask will benefit your skin.  The mint and eucalyptus cold essential oils refresh the skin, which restores radiance and provides vitality. You will notice that these oils give the mask an incredible smell, as well as a cooling effect to on your skin! The AHA Complex boosts cellular renewal by eliminating dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. Dyalift forms a film at the skin’s surface that coats and firms the skin. Lift Firming Complex combats skin laxity thanks to its instant and intense firming effect. Hydrocyte Complex hydrates and provides long-lasting moisture to cells, compensating dehydration lines.  It’s simply amazing that Guinot has been able to combine all of these great benefits in just one bottle.

One of my absolute favorite features of the Instant Radiance face mask is that it actively exfoliates your skin while it’s treating it. This makes it a perfect product for anyone who doesn’t have time to use a separate exfoliator and a mask.  Lastly and for some people the most important feature is that this masque can give you results in as little as three minutes (yes, I said THREE)! This mask is ideal for all skin types as well.  For best results use once or twice a week for up to 10 minutes.

Why use a Guinot Gommage Exfoliator?

Why should you be using an exfoliator?  To remove dead cell and reveal Healthy new vibrant skin!

[youtubegallery] Guinot Gommage Exfoliator Tutorial|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZaGlmYmiO0
[/youtubegallery]

The epidermis (top layer of skin) is composed of roughly 30 dead cell layers.  When the outer layers are dehydrated (contributing factors: over sun exposure, not enough protection against the elements, sickness, aging, etc) this causes the skin to become dull and lifeless.  Fatigue, stress and time all contribute to the loss of radiance, resulting in lack of elasticity in the skin. The outer epidermis layers become clogged with dehydrated cells, which slow down cellular removal which adds to the complexion appearing dull and lifeless.  Thus there is an extreme importance to using at home exfoliants, which enable the skin to breath, revealing a more youthful and radiant complexion.

Guinot has developed two very important home care exfoliating (or in French, Gommage) products. It has only been in the last ten years that we in the skin care industry have become aware of the importance of regular cell removal.
Both of these exfoliators that Guinot makes are extremely popular and effective home care products. Each one is different and goes about removing dead cells in different ways.  One exfoliant is granule based, while the other in fruit-acid based.  Both are very easy to apply, and give outstanding results.

Gommage Grain D’eclat: This exfoliator contains micronized manmade granules in a cream, which is applied to a dry skin and gently sloughed off after the cream has dried on the skin. It is the most gentle of exfoliants, and contains jojoba oil, which instantly moisturizes the skin and  prepares the skin for optimal results with the products to follow, such as a mask or moisturizer.

Gommage Biologique: This exfoliator gently exfoliates fragile and sensitive skin.  It contains AHA natural fruit acids and green tea, which  is a stimulating antioxidant that gives a youthful boost to the complexion.

When used on a regular basis these products are of great value to anyone interested in a healthy glowing complexion.  Please see the video above that we have prepared for you to see how to best use each of these exfoliators.
