What is a facial?

A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable Esthetician. Facials clean, exfoliate and nourish the skin, promoting a clear, hydrated complexion, and can help improve and maintain a youthful appearance.

A facial will provide the best results when it is a part of an on-going skincare program, including regular facial treatments as well as at-home care. Facial treatments can include a variety of actions, including cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, facial masks, peels and massage.

Why do people need facials?

  • Facials can actually clear your pores. A professional treatment will cleanse your skin in a way that you simply cannot achieve at home.
  • If your skin is behaving badly, you’ll find out why. Your skin can and will change over time, this can vary depending on age, weather and even hormones. It is always a good idea to have a licensed Esthetician help you to address those changes, identify the potential reason and to educate you on how to treat those concerns. If you have great skin now, don’t trust that it will last forever. For example, many people suffer from eczema in the winter and will simply blame dryness. Not treating a serious condition such as this can lead to long-term damage!
  • You can get extractions done the right way. Don’t lie, we know you do it, but every time you squeeze a pimple you are risking acne scarring and dark marks. Extractions done regularly by an Esthetician will help keep your skin to stay clear. It will also help prevent long-term damage that you might be causing by doing it yourself at home. You may even find that receiving regular facials will eliminate any reason to pop or pick at any blemishes. Facial are an essential step to preventing imperfections.
  • Facials are better than a visit to the beauty counter. You know when you go to a department store and someone tells you what to buy based on looking at your skin under fluorescent lights? This is not how you should be purchasing your skincare items. A knowledgeable, licensed Esthetician will provide you with personalized skin recommendations and a regimen that will address your individual concerns. The best way for anyone to make suitable recommendations for your skin is to examine your bare skin after it has been cleansed. Once you’re on the appropriate regimen, your Esthetician should update it seasonally as your skin changes. It’s like having your own skin concierge!
  • You’ll find your happy place. Facials are so much more relaxing than any DIY project you try on your skin at home. At Fountains many facials include a mix of high frequency, massage and hot towels, all to maximize the pampering experience. Stress can highly contribute to skin issues; therefore a facial can improve not only breakouts, but it can also give you a reason to take a few deep, cleansing breaths, and relax.

How often should people get facials?

The frequency in which a person receives facials depends on several factors, your skin type, condition, skincare goals, age, even where you live. On average, getting a facial by a professional once a month is ideal for someone who wants to maintain healthy looking skin.

It’s important to remember that the skin is a living organ, and because of that it goes through a type of shedding process. It takes about 30 days for skin cells to move up from the dermis (deeper layers of skin) to the epidermis (surface skin). Once the cells reach the surface, they flatten out, die, and stay right there on the surface of your skin. A facial simulates the exfoliation process, keeping the skin more toned and youthful looking. At a minimum a person should try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes.

Danielle’s Skincare Routine

Ideal Skin Type: Dry Skin

My name is Danielle, and I wanted to share my daily skincare routine with you. First I’ll give you a little background information about me. I am originally from Maryland, but before moving back, I lived in Florida for 4 years.  During my time there, I did what any Floridian does, I soaked up the Sun, which resulted in many sunburns. I cringe now just thinking about it.  Eventually I wised up about how bad Sun damage was for my skin and quit the long days at the beach and started applying SPF.

I initially was interested in becoming a makeup artist. I was always doing makeup for my friends and family for events or dates. I wanted to become certified and began looking up makeup artist programs. During my search to become certified I started to discover Esthetics and began to develop a strong interest in it.  One thing led to another and I became a licensed Esthetician, and have fallen in love with skincare.

As a person with dry skin, this harsh winter has done a number on it. My skin was not only dry but flakey all over, and was in much need for some nourishment. The cleanser I’m using at the moment is the Lait Hyrda Confort cleansing milk. I absolutely love this cleanser, it takes off all of my makeup, makes my skin actually feel smooth, and did I mention it smells so good. This cleansing milk contains Shea Oil which leaves my skin feel so soft and healthy. It also contains Cornflower extracts, this helps to soothe my skin.

The way I use it is by pumping 2-4 pumps in my hands and work the cleanser around my dry face. I apply the milk to dry skin because it is an emollient, which helps to breakdown any dirt, oil or makeup that I have on my skin. Then I simply rinse the cleansing milk off with warm water and a shammy (a type of washcloth).

After cleansing my face, I apply a moisturizer. The moisturizers I use differs from day to night.  In the morning I use BiOxygene cream. I find that it provides my skin with hydration without being too heavy. I apply BiOxygene just before I put on my makeup.  It’s hydrating enough to give my makeup long staying power, and light enough to keep my makeup from slipping off my face.  Lastly, the smell of this cream is divine, very fresh and clean.
Because my skin has been recovering from the cold, to give it an added boost of nourishment, I have been apply Creme Nutrition Confort after I cleanse my skin at night.  This cream is filled with essential oils, such as, Lavender, Rosemary and Thyme.  These oils help repair and nourish very dry skin. This is a cream that I’m using to treat my dry skin, as the weather warms up and my skin balances out I may replace this moisturizer with BiOxygene, but for the time being this is a necessary product for me.

If anyone has any questions about any of the products I use, or if you are interested in having a skin consultation and facial, just stop by the spa, I’m always happy to meet new people.

Treatment Spotlight: Super Hydradermie

Treatment Spotlight: Super Hydradermie

Ideal Client: Anyone

The Super Hydradermie is a great facial to get rid of all that dry, dull skin that has been building up over the past few chilling months. It combines the exfoliating peel of the Beaute Neuve Facial and the deep cleansing and hydration of the Hydradermie Facial. This is what I like to call “The best of both worlds.” The peel contains a gentle mix of fruit acids including Glycolic and Citric acid. Glycolic Acid is an exfoliator that removes the outer layer of dead skin cells, resulting in fresh new skin. It can also help lighten skin discoloration, such as sun or age spots, as well as help those with acne-prone and blackhead-prone skin.  Citric acid contains vitamin C, which is considered to be a very powerful antioxidant that can stimulate collagen production, plumping up the skin.

This fruit-acid exfoliation is then balanced by a neutralizing treatment  foam, that removes the dead skin cells that the fruit acid has been breaking down, and leaves the skin looking brighter, and healthier. After continued treatments the appearance of hyper pigmentation will begin to diminish.

Once your skin has received this gentle yet thorough exfoliation, the deep cleansing of the traditional Hydradermie begins. Your Esthetican uses galvanic current and customized gels, based on your skin condition. The current not only allows the treatment gels to penetrate further into the skin, but it also helps to pull impurities out, making extraction (if needed) much easier.

Following the current, an oxygenating cream is applied and a high frequency wand is passed over the skin for several minutes, to further oxygenate and soothe the skin. The facial finishes with a individually prescribed mask and followed with an appropriate moisturizer, protecting the skin from the outside elements.

The Super Hydradermie is ideal for clients wanting a deeper exfoliation, improve skin texture, even out their complexion, and increase overall hydration.

For those of you who know me and know my obsession with deodorants (not anti-perspirants), I am thrilled to inform you that Guinot has now developed not one, but two deodorants. Both are effective and have added benefits in these products, which inhibit re-growth and greatly slow it down over time.

The two products I am speaking of are Guinot Deo Epil Smart (After Hair Removal Deodorant Spray) and Guinot Deo Crème Epil Smart (After Hair Removal Deodorant Cream). Both are anti re-growth deodorants that do not contain alcohol or aluminum salts.

Why I’m Anti Antiperspirants

The widespread use of antiperspirants is a huge concern of mine. I would like to point out to those of you who are not aware, the big differences between deodorants and antiperspirants. Antiperspirants contain small particles of aluminum, (deodorants do not).  Aluminum stops the body from perspiring. I like to compare it to putting a plug in the bathtub: when the plug is in, the water cannot escape. The same idea happens when you use your antiperspirant, you do not perspire.  This may sound like a good thing, however what is happening when you perspire is your body is removing uric acid that is in your perspiration. By not allowing the body to rid this acid through sweating, it will begin to build up and over time until the body finds another area of the body to send it to, eventually causing more congestion elsewhere.

Perspiration helps to regulate body temperature, as well as to eliminate uric acid.  Neither function can occur correctly when using an antiperspirant product. Many people are not even aware that they are using these damaging products on a daily basis. It is very important to read labels today, remember: no aluminum salts!

Deodorants work to mask body odor while allowing the body to function normally and naturally. This is an easy step to take towards living a healthier lifestyle. As we are all living longer these days it is better to be free from aluminum products as some studies now suggest that a build-up of aluminum in the body can contributes to Alzheimer’s.

I have noticed a great improvement with my clients who have chosen to switch from an antiperspirant to a deodorant. Some of the biggest differences I have seen are clearer skin with less break-outs (even on the chest and back). Another big difference I have seen and clients have shared with me is the disappearance of cellulite. It just makes sense, if you allow your body to eliminate toxins naturally, your body will pay back tenfold! Think about it.

Introducing Guinot’s Deodorant

Both of these products have a light pleasant fragrance and are easy to use. The Deo Epil Smart has a super concentrated formula, and comes in a small compact spray that dispenses the perfect amount of product. The packaging enables you to carry it with you and re-apply if needed on the go. This spray is effective in neutralizing the formation of body odor, and helps to control perspiration without blocking the body’s natural process.

The second deodorant product that Guinot has introduced is the “Deo” Cream Epil Smart. This cream incorporates all the benefits of the Epil Smart spray, but comes in a cream base. Just as with the spray, this cream accts directly on the hair room to slow hair regrowth.

The ingredient, Bulbaine is found in both of these products. Bulbaine is a patented complex, of plant and marine extract, when used on a daily basis; it helps to prolong the effects of hair removal (either waxing or shaving). Leaving the under arm skin clean and hair free for a longer period of time.

Guinot Deo Compact Epil Spray   $13.00
