Lymphatic Drainage Massage: 101

Guest Blogger: Tiffany Davidson

History of Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic Draining is a gentle, non-invasive technique that has a powerful effect on the body. However this technique hasn’t been around forever, in fact the Lyphatic System was first discovered in 1622 by the medical. Later, an Italian physician Hazleton Asselli noticed milky veins in a dog after it was given food.  The term, Lymphatic Drainage was later coined by an Osteopathic Doctor from Toronto named, Frederic Maillard.

In 1932, Danish Massage Practitioner, Emil Vodder developed a hands-on technique for lymph drainage called, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, which is a type of gentle massage that encourages the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.

LymphaticSystem_Female

How the Lymphatic System Works for the Body

The Lymphatic System moves fluids through your body and returns it to the Circulatory System. It is the body’s way of disposing of waste, bacteria, excess water, proteins, and more. These are cleared away from the connective tissue and returned to the blood stream for removal by the kidneys. The Lymphatic System collects proteins and molecules that are too large to return to the blood. The proteins of molecules are transported and filter through the lymph nodes and then rejoin the blood by the Subclavian and Jugular veins.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage requires that the skin is stretched and torqued in a specific manner, based on scientific, physiological principles that are proven to encourage lymph flow.

How Can Lymphatic Drainage Help You?

Lymphatic Drainage massage is a gentle moving massage and it increases lymphatic circulation it helps to remove the toxins from the body and assists load lymph nodes. Lymphatic drainage cleanses and regenerates tissue and therefore promotes homeostasis in the body.

The internal movements that this massage stimulates, encourages the formation of lymphocytes which in turn produces antibodies which helped the body’s resistance to infection. Lymphatic Drainage also encourages and improves lymph drainage in the healthy lymph vessels, which helps keep fluid away from swollen areas.

Pregnancy Facials

You’re pregnant, congratulations! When first finding out your expecting there are so many emotions that come along with the news. While being very excited, you may also become anxious about all the changes that are coming your way, including all the physical changes that are about to happen to your body. This is a really important time to give your body some extra TLC and take care of yourself. There are several treatments at Fountains Day Spa that can help ease your worries about pregnancy skin and body issues.

Common Skincare Issues During Pregnancy

During pregnancy our body creates extra hormones that can contribute to some not so fun skin issues. Receiving regular facials during pregnancy will help combat the following issues:

Dehydration – When growing a baby, your body’s primary need is to feed and nourish the baby.  Many times, this means that we, ourselves are not getting enough hydration from the water we drink. It’s important to increase the amount of water you intake, but sometimes increasing our water intake is just not enough to avoid dry/dehydrated skin.

Redness – During pregnancy our bodies produce about 20% more blood than usual. Unfortunately, with pregnancy also comes fatigue and nausea that can contribute to a decrease in body circulation due to a decrease in activity. With the increase of blood flow and decrease in circulation you may notice more redness in the skin, as there is extra stagnate blood than normal. There is also a rise in the body’s temperature that can cause you to feel hot and flushed more often as well.

Breakouts and Acne – With the increase of hormones it is common to notice some small breakouts during pregnancy. As the uterus is enlarged it compresses and restricts the body’s natural way of removing toxins. This can cause extra breakouts, as your body is finding new ways to get rid of toxins.

Hyper-pigmentation – Extra hormones can also be contributed to hyper-pigmentation or melasma. This is commonly known as the pregnancy mask. Between 50-70% of women will experience this at some point during pregnancy, it’s also more likely with multiple pregnancies. The increase in hormones creates an increase in melanin, which provides our skin it’s color. When the hormones cause the melanin to become active some melanocytes stay active during your pregnancy creating an over abundance of melanin in the skin. It’s very important to protect yourself from the sun, as this also helps activate melanocytes and will increase yours odds of hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy.

Types of Facial to Have During Pregnancy

How can your Esthetician help keep your skin concerns at bay? We have several treatments to combat these concerns while keeping you relaxed during this stressful mile stone. When booking your appointment to come in, please be sure to mention your pregnancy, as there are also some facial treatments that should be avoided for you and for the wellbeing of your baby.

We offer several facials that include the use of currents and frequencies, which are not safe to receive for expecting mothers. We can save those treatments for after your healthy baby has arrived and you’re ready to get back into your normal skin care routine! Here are the treatments that can be beneficial during pregnancy:

Woman receiving facial treatment in spa

Aromatics Facial– This relaxing facial uses essential oil blends suited for your skin type to help nourish and hydrate the skin. The oils are used while performing a lymphatic facial massage, this will help your body get rid of toxins and reduce redness. The aromatics mask is a setting mask, which binds water to the skin for extra hydration. This facial is perfect for any mom to be, that is experiencing redness, breakouts or dehydration.

Beaute Nueve Facial– This facial is for the mom to be that is experiencing issues with hyper-pigmentation. A gentle fruit acid peel is used for extra exfoliation, followed by a vitamin C mask to help lighten and inhibit the production of melanin. This facial will help to unclog pores, soften lines and fade brown spots, while promoting a softer, clearer complexion.

HydraClean Facial– The HydraClean facial is a 25 minute facial working on cleaning the skin. A heated wand is used to relax and open the pore so extractions can be performed.  This is a good facial for moms who may have had a regular facial routine before getting pregnant and wants to continue regular maintenance. It would also be ideal for moms to be that have grown uncomfortable laying down for long periods of time.

Pair a Pregnancy Facial with a Pregnancy Massage

Skin issues are a big concern during pregnancy, but let’s not forget about the rest of your body! With a growing body comes a lot of aches and pains that you may not be used to having. Fountains Day Spa also has great massage therapist trained in parental massage to help ease these pains. What is a facial?

A facial is one of the best ways to take care of your skin, especially when it’s given by an experienced, knowledgeable Esthetician. Facials clean, exfoliate and nourish the skin, promoting a clear, hydrated complexion, and can help improve and maintain a youthful appearance.

A facial will provide the best results when it is a part of an on-going skincare program, including regular facial treatments as well as at-home care. Facial treatments can include a variety of actions, including cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, facial masks, peels and massage.

1

Why do people need facials?

  • Facials can actually clear your pores. A professional treatment will cleanse your skin in a way that you simply cannot achieve at home.
  • If your skin is behaving badly, you’ll find out why. Your skin can and will change over time, this can vary depending on age, weather and even hormones. It is always a good idea to have a licensed Esthetician help you to address those changes, identify the potential reason and to educate you on how to treat those concerns. If you have great skin now, don’t trust that it will last forever. For example, many people suffer from eczema in the winter and will simply blame dryness. Not treating a serious condition such as this can lead to long-term damage!
  • You can get extractions done the right way. Don’t lie, we know you do it, but every time you squeeze a pimple you are risking acne scarring and dark marks. Extractions done regularly by an Esthetician will help keep your skin to stay clear. It will also help prevent long-term damage that you might be causing by doing it yourself at home. You may even find that receiving regular facials will eliminate any reason to pop or pick at any blemishes. Facial are an essential step to preventing imperfections.
  • Facials are better than a visit to the beauty counter. You know when you go to a department store and someone tells you what to buy based on looking at your skin under fluorescent lights? This is not how you should be purchasing your skincare items. A knowledgeable, licensed Esthetician will provide you with personalized skin recommendations and a regimen that will address your individual concerns. The best way for anyone to make suitable recommendations for your skin is to examine your bare skin after it has been cleansed. Once you’re on the appropriate regimen, your Esthetician should update it seasonally as your skin changes. It’s like having your own skin concierge!
  • You’ll find your happy place. Facials are so much more relaxing than any DIY project you try on your skin at home. At Fountains many facials include a mix of high frequency, massage and hot towels, all to maximize the pampering experience. Stress can highly contribute to skin issues; therefore a facial can improve not only breakouts, but it can also give you a reason to take a few deep, cleansing breaths, and relax.

MicroDermabrasion

How often should people get facials?

The frequency in which a person receives facials depends on several factors, your skin type, condition, skincare goals, age, even where you live. On average, getting a facial by a professional once a month is ideal for someone who wants to maintain healthy looking skin.

It’s important to remember that the skin is a living organ, and because of that it goes through a type of shedding process. It takes about 30 days for skin cells to move up from the dermis (deeper layers of skin) to the epidermis (surface skin). Once the cells reach the surface, they flatten out, die, and stay right there on the surface of your skin. A facial simulates the exfoliation process, keeping the skin more toned and youthful looking. At a minimum a person should try to have a facial at least four times a year, as the season changes.

Essential Oils and Massage

When you walk into a spa and smell all the incredible scents, such as lavender, peppermint, lemon, ylang ylang, etc., what’s your first thought? You think about how amazing it smells! What if I told you that those smells benefit both your mind, and your body?

The scientific aspect of aromatherapy comes from knowing the subtle differences in essential oils that are attributable to thousands of aroma chemicals, and how these chemical elements affect the human body. The aromatic properties of natural essential oils are a catalyst for change in the human mind and body.

essential oil female back spa

Essential oil aromas stimulate the part of the brain that affects emotion. The shape of an essential oil molecule is like a key that opens lock-like structure in the olfactory nerve receptors in our nostrils. The impression of the aroma is sent directly and immediately to the limbic system. This is where memories are stored as well as where pleasure and emotions are perceived. When stimulated, the limbic system releases chemicals that affect the central nervous system. Serotonin counteracts anxiety; endorphins reduce pain. Inhaling essential oils can help attain a pleasurable emotional balance. A balanced emotional state in turn can have a therapeutic effect on physical problems.

Lavender herb and essential oil

Essential oils have positive effects on every level of your being. Their unique properties enhance the mind, body and spirit. Aromatherapy is the creative and scientific application of essential oils to create beneficial changes in our lives on aesthetic, therapeutic and mystical levels.

Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Sweet Orange, and Sage are just a few of my personal favorites! Each have their own properties and benefits, but probably one of the most popular oils that I use during an aromatherapy massage is Lavender. Lavender is good for calming and relaxing as well as skin health, and restoring.

Overall, essential oils are a great enhancement and bring more benefits to your massage!

Everyone Is Getting Microdermabrasions…Even Statues

A few months ago, I read a newspaper article about how the Ulysses S. Grant bronze memorial, after 93 years is undergoing a month long restoration to remove a massive buildup of bronze patina deposits, rust, dirt and grime. “Weary. Sick. Beleaguered.” is how they described the monument’s condition.

What does the U.S. Grant Memorial have to do with Microdermabrasion? One of the main techniques they are using for the restoration is sandblasting — shooting streams of sand under pressure, which cuts through the grime and abrades the surface, leaving it as smooth and clean as it was 93 years ago. That basic concept for our purposes –applying a crystalline material known as aluminum oxide — is how microdermabrasion smoothes and refines the texture of the skin.

What is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is an effective way to diminish acne scarring, large pores, fine lines, and hyper pigmentation (sun damage) by exfoliating the top layers of the skin. Other benefits include boosting the cellular renewal rate and stimulating collagen production–both of which are key elements of youthful radiant, firm skin.

There are many degrees of intensity when it comes to exfoliation. The exfoliation you do at home is very mild. Microdermabrasion is much more aggressive, although not nearly as aggressive as some of the medical grade chemical peels, usually administered in a doctor’s office. One might think that microdermabrasion would be painful, but the vast majority of clients who get microdermabrasion do not feel even the slightest amount of pain. This is because the machine has intensity settings which allows the Esthetician to apply a lighter touch for more sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion has been performed in the U.S. for about twenty years and in Europe for 35 years. It was developed as an alternative to a much more aggressive (and painful) treatment simply called, Dermabrasion. Dermabrasion often required an anesthetic and left the skin extremely irritated and swollen for several weeks. Microdermabrasion avoids these negative effects. In fact, microdermabrasion is often referred to as a “lunchtime peel” because there is no down time — you can get the treatment on your lunch hour and return to work with radiant, glowing skin!

Microdermabrasion

Who Should Avoid Microdermabrasion

Although most people are good candidates for microdermabrasion, it is not for everyone. If any of the following conditions are present, we would not recommend microdermabrasion:

• Extremely Sensitive skin; moderate to severe rosacea
• Large amounts of broken capillaries, also known as Couperosis
• Severe acne, characterized mainly by pustules and inflammation (wet acne)
• Autoimmune disorders
• Eczema
• Dermatitis
• Diabetes
• Psoriasis
• Lupus
• Recent Laser treatments or cosmetic injections
• Use of Accutane within the past year (a very strong acne medication with significant side effects)
• Use of highly concentrated Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s) within the past month
• Use of Vitamin A derivatives such as Retin-A, Renova, or Differin within the past month

We ask new facial clients to complete a questionnaire which will give us more insight as to whether you would be a good fit for microdermabrasion. We also have a brief consultation before performing a microdermabrasion treatment.

Microdermabrasion Results

It is important to note that microdermabrasion will not result in perfect skin. Deep wrinkling, severe scarring and severe hyper pigmentation can be diminished, but we don’t want to give you the impression that these conditions will disappear with a single microdermabrasion treatment. We always see improvement in the skin, even after one treatment, but the degree of improvement will vary with each person. For maximum results, we recommend a series of six treatments to be performed 10-14 days within each session. This six treatment series can be done up to three times a year.

Another key consideration is that microdermabrasion makes the skin more vulnerable to the effects of the sun. For those who spend lots of time outside during the summer — at the beach, pool, on a boat, or on the golf course, we recommend holding off on microdermabrasion treatments during the summer. Now that fall is here, it’s the perfect time for getting a microdermabrasion treatment. But even during the cooler months, it is extremely important to still use a sun block to protect the skin and maximize the results. Applying a moisturizer three times a day for the four days after microdermabrasion will minimize any drying effects as a result of microdermabrasion.

MicroDermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is also popular with people who don’t really have conditions that they wish to correct — they simply want to maintain healthy, smooth, glowing skin. These people will often do a microdermabrasion treatment, every few months as an alternative to our traditional Guinot facials.

We welcome any questions you may have about microdermabrasion.

Anti-Aging Skincare Program – Final Week

Anti-Aging Skincare Program

Week 4

Mary has completed her skincare plan, let’s review what her specific skincare plan entailed. Mary and her Esthetician decided that the Anti- Aging program would be the most ideal for her, considering her skin concerns and goals. This program was created to target two main concerns regarding aging skin, the toning and tightening of facial muscles under the skin and the plumping, smoothing and firming the surface skin.

FullBeforeAfter

The two facials that create this program are the Age Summum Facial and The Lift Facial, both facials are performed twice during the duration of the program. The Age Summum works on firming of the surface skin, while plumping it up with a vigorous lifting massage, using Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C to provide a visibly-increased amount of tautness in the skin. Then, The Lift Facial focuses on stimulating the muscle tone of the face, highly concentrating on the muscles in the neck and around the mouth and eyes. The use of a micro-current is what provides the lift and stimulation to the muscles in the face.

Mary has continued to receive compliments from family members and friends. Her husband was the first to notice right after her first facial in the program. Mary also found herself at a party, hosted by her sister-in-law, where her friends came up to her and said how well-rested she looked.

What Changes Mary Noticed

Of course it’s always nice to hear people compliment you on your skin, however it’s most important to notice those changes yourself. Now that Mary has completed her program, we asked her what she noticed about her skin during the course of the program, and at the end. “My skin is consistently brighter, every day I’ve noticed this. Even when I am sleep-deprived, I look lifted! Before the program my skin had sometimes appeared saggy, but now I look refreshed on a daily basis.”

We were curious if she had noticed a difference in her skin after each facial was complete. “I saw a consistent change when I would look in the mirror. Especially first thing when I woke up and would look in the mirror without a trace of makeup on.”

MaryBeforeAfterProgram

Mary’s Overall Thoughts On The Program

Mary loved the results she received from completing her Anti-Aging Skincare Program. When asked if this was something she would do again in the future, she said, “Absolutely yes! I would do this program again if I was preparing for a special event or even if I needed a boost in my skincare regime.”

“I would recommend this program to my friends who wanted to have a real improvement in their skin, and what they saw when they looked in the mirror. I personally would only recommend a skincare program to someone I am close with, close enough that I feel comfortable talking about signs of aging skin with.” We understand Mary, you can leave it to our Estheticians to talk to people about their aging skin, just point them in our direction after you get your compliments!

EyesBeforeAfter

Esthetician’s Thoughts

We checked in with Mary’s Esthetician, Suzanne at the beginning of her program, now let’s check back in with her and see how she feels about Mary’s results. “This program really addressed Mary’s issues that she had with her skin. Her skin looks lifted around the mouth, and refined lines around the eyes. Overall it softened her facial features.” Suzanne does feel that Mary received the results that they had expected from this program, and Suzanne notes that the results were heightened because Mary had “a great home care routine.”

Specifically for Mary, Suzanne would recommend a monthly facial to maintain her current skin condition. However she does suggest that Mary consider doing another skincare program in the Winter time. As the weather gets colder, the skin can tend to dry out, and a skincare program is a great way to combat that. Again Suzanne stresses that this suggestion is specifically for Mary. What type and the frequency of a skincare program will vary depending on the client and their individual needs.

Anti-Aging Skincare Program – Week 3

Anti-Aging Skincare Program

Week 3

Let’s recap what we’ve done so far with Mary’s Skincare Program, she is currently completing the “Anti-Aging” Program. At this point, Mary has completed three of the four facials in her Skincare Program, two Age Summum Facials, one Lift Facial, and one Lift Facial, that will be completed next week.

Let’s Check-in Before She Begins Her Third Facial

Before starting her third facial this week, we wanted to check in with Mary to see how her skin was doing. In reference to the first two facials in her program, Mary noted, “There is a clear difference in my skin, having these two facials so close together. My skin it noticeably different, it’s plump, moist and smother, and my face looks lifted and has for the past two weeks. I like what I see in the mirror first thing in the morning. I don’t look tired, my skin looks alive.”

This is what we would expect at this half way point. Between her first two facials, and her at home care (you can see what products she’s using be checking out Week 2 of her skincare blog) she has basically been on a skincare workout routine. Although simply being on a skincare program will boost the skin’s health, having a good at-home routine as well, will not only boost any benefits received from the facials in the program, but will also prolong the results.

MaryWeek1Week3

Age Summum vs. The Lift

The Age Summum and The Lift are the two facials that complete the Anti-Aging Skincare Program. They both combat signs of aging, but do so in two completely different ways. The Age Summum fights the aging process externally, while the Lift battles signs of aging internally. Let take a closer look at each of these facials and get Mary’s thoughts on each of them.

Age Summum

The Age Summum is an anti-aging treatment that will help regenerate, firm, and restore the skin’s radiance. The exfoliation process helps to improve circulation, diminish fine lines and wrinkles and even out the skin’s tone. This treatment rejuvenates and brightens the skin for a more youthful glow.

Mary expressed that she felt the Age Summum immediately made your skin fell lifted and tighter directly after the facial. Then after a few days, she noticed her skin continued to feel hydrated and was fuller and plumper.

AgeSummumMask

Age Summum Mask

The Lift

The Lift facial creates a natural, temporary “Face-Lift” effect by lifting facial features through muscle stimulation. The specific muscle-stimulation that this treatment uses, is  called a micro-current. This current exerts a lifting effect on the facial features and oxygenate the skin. The Lift allows the skin to regain its tone and surface wrinkles to begin to fade. This facial is like “body building” for the face.

Although Mary has enjoyed both facials thus far, she does note that she may favor The Lift a little more. “They are both different. I do not prefer one over the other. Both have given me positive results. Possibly The Lift contributed a bit more to my firming and smoothness.”

Using Micro-Current During The Lift

Anti-Aging Skincare Program – Week 2

Anti-Aging Skincare Program

Week 2

Last week Mary began her Anti-Aging Skincare Program and let us come along for the ride with her. She received the first facial in the program, The Age Summum, which helps fight signs of aging on the surface level. This week Mary received The Lift Treatment, which aggressively fights signs of aging under the surface by using a micro-current to stimulate facial muscles.

Mary’s Week After Her First Treatment

Mary spent some precious “alone-time” with her kids, and even said that her husband complimented her on how her skin looked. Mary expressed seeing “immediate results” after receiving her first facial. “My skin felt lifted and tighter.” This is due to the Pure Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and Pro-Collagen, which stimulate the synthesis of collagen, fight skin slackening and smooth wrinkles. After a few days had passed, Mary reported the her skin appears to be more “plump, full and hydrated.”

BeforeAfterWeek2

At Home Skincare Routine

Mary truly understands that any good skin treatment goes hand-in-hand with good at home care. That being said, her at-home skincare regime is not complicated. In the morning, she cleanses her skin with the Guinot Brightening Cleaner and follows with Guinot Age Logic Cellulaire as her daytime moisturizer. In the evening though she does step up her game a bit, she uses the same products in the evening as she does in the morning, but also includes Guinot Time Logic Serum before putting on her moisturizer and then uses Guinot Age Logic Yuex around her eyes. “I always remove my makeup before going to bed.”
