Common Skincare Issues During Pregnancy

During pregnancy our body creates extra hormones that can contribute to some not so fun skin issues. Receiving regular facials during pregnancy will help combat the following issues:

Dehydration – When growing a baby, your body’s primary need is to feed and nourish the baby.  Many times, this means that we, ourselves are not getting enough hydration from the water we drink. It’s important to increase the amount of water you intake, but sometimes increasing our water intake is just not enough to avoid dry/dehydrated skin.

Redness – During pregnancy our bodies produce about 20% more blood than usual. Unfortunately, with pregnancy also comes fatigue and nausea that can contribute to a decrease in body circulation due to a decrease in activity. With the increase of blood flow and decrease in circulation you may notice more redness in the skin, as there is extra stagnate blood than normal. There is also a rise in the body’s temperature that can cause you to feel hot and flushed more often as well.

Breakouts and Acne – With the increase of hormones it is common to notice some small breakouts during pregnancy. As the uterus is enlarged it compresses and restricts the body’s natural way of removing toxins. This can cause extra breakouts, as your body is finding new ways to get rid of toxins.

Hyper-pigmentation – Extra hormones can also be contributed to hyper-pigmentation or melasma. This is commonly known as the pregnancy mask. Between 50-70% of women will experience this at some point during pregnancy, it’s also more likely with multiple pregnancies. The increase in hormones creates an increase in melanin, which provides our skin it’s color. When the hormones cause the melanin to become active some melanocytes stay active during your pregnancy creating an over abundance of melanin in the skin. It’s very important to protect yourself from the sun, as this also helps activate melanocytes and will increase yours odds of hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy.

Types of Facial to Have During Pregnancy

How can your Esthetician help keep your skin concerns at bay? We have several treatments to combat these concerns while keeping you relaxed during this stressful mile stone. When booking your appointment to come in, please be sure to mention your pregnancy, as there are also some facial treatments that should be avoided for you and for the wellbeing of your baby.

We offer several facials that include the use of currents and frequencies, which are not safe to receive for expecting mothers. We can save those treatments for after your healthy baby has arrived and you’re ready to get back into your normal skin care routine! Here are the treatments that can be beneficial during pregnancy:

Aromatics Facial– This relaxing facial uses essential oil blends suited for your skin type to help nourish and hydrate the skin. The oils are used while performing a lymphatic facial massage, this will help your body get rid of toxins and reduce redness. The aromatics mask is a setting mask, which binds water to the skin for extra hydration. This facial is perfect for any mom to be, that is experiencing redness, breakouts or dehydration.

Beaute Nueve Facial– This facial is for the mom to be that is experiencing issues with hyper-pigmentation. A gentle fruit acid peel is used for extra exfoliation, followed by a vitamin C mask to help lighten and inhibit the production of melanin. This facial will help to unclog pores, soften lines and fade brown spots, while promoting a softer, clearer complexion.

HydraClean Facial– The HydraClean facial is a 25 minute facial working on cleaning the skin. A heated wand is used to relax and open the pore so extractions can be performed.  This is a good facial for moms who may have had a regular facial routine before getting pregnant and wants to continue regular maintenance. It would also be ideal for moms to be that have grown uncomfortable laying down for long periods of time.
