Guinot’s Double Ionisation Hydradermie

Blog Author: Suzanne Olsen

For those of you who love the results with the original Hydradermie, get ready to be blown away with the new treatment. We are one of the first Spas in the USA to receive our Double Ionisation Hydradermie Machine. We are now offering two levels for all of our Hydradermie Facials. We will still offer the Original, Super and Ultra Hydradermie, however, if you would like to enhance any of these facials, you can do so by requesting Double Ionisation.

The Standard Hydradermie

The Hydradermie is a facial that has been around for decades and our clients love it. A key factor of this facial is that it uses direct and indirect galvanic current. During the facial, your beauty therapist hands you the negative metal rod as they pass positively-charged rollers over your skin. The negative metal rod in your hand actually attracts and pulls the positive ions from the rollers deeper into your skin as they glide over the face. This process allows the active ingredients contained in the Guinot Gels to nourish and hydrate the dermis and epidermis (outer layer) at the same time relaxing the tiny muscle that holds the pore closed enabling the therapist to perform extractions with ease. Once the skin has been deep cleansed the second and very important part of the facial begins.

With the skin clean and the pores open we bathe the skin in oxygen, giving life to the cells. This part is so important no matter the age or skin type. A relaxing facial massage is given before the final step, the individual face mask chosen for your skin type.

DoubleIonHydra

The Double Ionisation Hydradermie

With Double Ionisation the effect of the current is dispersed directly on the surface of the skin, sending the superfood gels (rich in calcium potassium and algae minerals) deeper into the skin, providing you with greater longer lasting results. The Double Ionisation Hydradermie will take the same amount of time as the Hydradermie, however, there is no longer a need to hold the negative metal rod. Instead of the client holding it, in the new treatment the Esthetician holds both the positive and negative currents in their hand and use them both simultaneously directly on the skin. By having both the negative and positive electrodes pass over the skin at the same time (Double Ionisation) the client is receiving double the benefits, compared to the standard Hydradermie. The positive current helps the nutrients of the treatment gels to go further into the skin, while the negative current is pulling impurities out.

The treatment gels that are used during the facial are formulated to deliver deeper nutrients to the core cells, thus increasing the lifespan of that cell while also aiding the negative current to pull out impurities at the same time, making pore cleansing more effective. Compared to the results or the original Hydradermie, the Double Ionization provides more visible and longer lasting results.

DoubleIOnHydra2

To Sum It Up

The Double Ionisation reaches deeper, enabling the gels to perform more effectively than ever before. Bringing your skin instant radiance as well as hydration. Since the gels are penetrating deeper into the skin, the core cell’s life span and productivity are increased, in other words, your skin cell will live longer and become stronger. I really am excited to have you experience the new double ionization hydradermie and see for yourself what a difference just one treatment makes.

How Glycation Accelerates the Aging Process

How Glycation Accelerates   The Aging Process

Guest Blogger: Francis Vergara

Glycation

I often note that some of the key enemies of the skin and factors that accelerate the aging process include several “s-words” — smoking, sun, stress, sugar, and inadequate sleep. Today we’re going to focus on what kind of damage excessive sugar causes, and what can be done to minimize it.

Ingesting excess sugar causes a process known as glycation (glie-KAY-shun) to occur. This is where sugar molecules attach to proteins, which basically weakens them and diminishes their ability to function properly. The two key proteins that we’re concerned about are collagen and elastin–the support structure that keeps young skin firm and flexible. As we age, the strength and density of collagen and elastin diminishes. Naturally, our goals in skin care are to slow the aging process, and create a healthy environment for the skin’s cells, tissues and anti-glycation measures should always be considered when setting our anti-aging strategy.

Dietary Changes

What dietary courses of action can we take to minimize glycation and it’s harmful effects? Decreasing our sugar intake –especially the more harmful white sugar and high fructose corn syrup contained in so many processed foods–is a good place to start. I’m happy to say that I kicked the “twizzler, gummy bear, and neon gummy-worm habit” several years ago, resulting in increased energy and improved sleep.

INGMRF-00189595-001

Carbohydrates, while needed by the body as a source of energy is converted into sugar. A healthy approach to carbohydrates is eat more of the good carbs –fruits, vegetables, whole grains — and avoid or decrease the bad ones such as candy, soda, and sugary cereals. The good carbs contain less sugar which is introduced to your system more slowly. We’re always advising skin care clients that diet affects the skin –glycation is one of many reasons to improve our diets.

Improve Your Skin Care Routine

Skin care, at the spa and in the home can fight glycation. Regular infusions of anti-glycation agents, particularly those found in Guinot’s “Cellular Life Complex” strengthen and energize the cells and tissues, making them less vulnerable and setting the stage for more effective collagen synthesis. When we’re in our 20’s our metabolism is more active, stronger, and fights the effects of glycation more effectively. As we age, energy and regeneration slows down — making it necessary to step up our anti-aging (anti-glycation) efforts. These more potent anti-glycation ingredients can be found in Guinot skin care products, including Age Logic Celllulaire Cream, Time Logic Age Serum, Pleine Vie, and Douceur de Vie SPF 15.

Guinot

In the spa, our facial treatments are designed to provide a deep infusion and higher concentrations of these anti-glycation agents. The world famous Hydradermie Facial does this by utilizing two types of electric current — galvanic and high frequency– to both ionize and oxygenate, resulting in immediate visible and lasting results. Regular facials make the skin more receptive to your home care regimen, and good home care makes our facials more effective.

In Conclusion

In summary, glycation is only one of the many factors that can accelerate the aging process. While glycation can never be eliminated, diet and specialized skin care can minimize its negative effects. Other factors can’t be ignored, especially lifestyle habits: exposure to the sun, smoking, inadequate sleep, and the effects of stress. These can all result in oxidation which produces a chain reaction of free radicals, making the components of our skin more vulnerable and ultimately causing it to age faster. Common sense proactive measures –avoid smoking, minimize sun exposure and the use of sunblock, and regular vigorous aerobic exercise to manage stress and stimulate the metabolism — are all necessary to maximize our anti-aging efforts.

Suzanne’s Sun Care Tips

Guinot Sun Products

Ideal Skin Type: All Skins

Very soon the warm weather will be beating down on us and I feel that after our long, drawn-out, cold winter, many of us will be rushing out to feel the warmth on our sun-deprived skins. Before you venture out, I want to pass on some valuable information to keep you and your skin enjoying the great outdoors without too much concern about the Sun’s rays and their effect on your skin.

For thousands of years, our ancestors knew the beach was a place to rejuvenate, get fresh air, build-up our Vitamin D levels and fill our lungs with fresh air.  The Sun warms our Earth, gives us light, and grows our food. It is extremely powerful in both good and harmful ways. I believe the Sun is a good thing, but just like anything that’s good, too much of it can be a bad thing.

 Guinot_Sun_Products

Follow these simple rules for sun exposure to keep yourself protected, safe, and having fun:

Safest times to be in the Sun:

If you are someone who loves feeling the warm rays on your skin, I suggest getting out early in the morning (7am -11am) or late in the evening (2pm-6pm). During these times, the Sun is farthest from your body and the rays are not as strong, meaning less damage can be done.

Application Tip:

I recommend applying two layers of any sun product you’re using. The first you rub into the skin and the 2nd you pat on top of your skin, right over the first layer. Studies show that when you rub a sun product into the skin it penetrates further, leaving the surface layer unprotected.

Use Sun protection that works:

I have previously blogged on Guinot’s Nucleic Defense Sun Protection Range before and how it differs from most other sun protection lines. Nucleic Defense is THE FIRST sunscreen formulated with DNA molecules and sun filters, other sunscreens only have sun filters. The DNA molecules are absorbed by the skin and act like an additional skin barrier to neutralize UV rays. Sunscreens without DNA in them allow the UV rays to penetrate into the skin, where they begin to damage your own skin’s DNA, causing premature aging, dehydration and hyper-pigmentation. I now have clients telling me of their experiences and how Guinot’s sun range has saved their skin from burning and aging.

GuinotDNA

One of my main objectives for this coming month is to educate as many people as I can on the importance of sun protection, how to use it, what products to use in certain locals, and what products to use for different skin types. Because, just like with with daily skincare, it’s not one-type-fits-all.

That being said, enjoy and relax in these coming months, but put on your sunscreen first!

If you have questions or concerns for your skin, please schedule a facial or skin consultation with one of our knowledgeable estheticians, 703-549-1990.

Danielle’s Skincare Routine

Danielle’s Skincare Routine

Ideal Skin Type: Dry Skin

Guest Blogger: Danielle Hoffman

My name is Danielle, and I wanted to share my daily skincare routine with you. First I’ll give you a little background information about me. I am originally from Maryland, but before moving back, I lived in Florida for 4 years.  During my time there, I did what any Floridian does, I soaked up the Sun, which resulted in many sunburns. I cringe now just thinking about it.  Eventually I wised up about how bad Sun damage was for my skin and quit the long days at the beach and started applying SPF.

I initially was interested in becoming a makeup artist. I was always doing makeup for my friends and family for events or dates. I wanted to become certified and began looking up makeup artist programs. During my search to become certified I started to discover Esthetics and began to develop a strong interest in it.  One thing led to another and I became a licensed Esthetician, and have fallen in love with skincare.

As a person with dry skin, this harsh winter has done a number on it. My skin was not only dry but flakey all over, and was in much need for some nourishment. The cleanser I’m using at the moment is the Lait Hyrda Confort cleansing milk. I absolutely love this cleanser, it takes off all of my makeup, makes my skin actually feel smooth, and did I mention it smells so good. This cleansing milk contains Shea Oil which leaves my skin feel so soft and healthy. It also contains Cornflower extracts, this helps to soothe my skin.

The way I use it is by pumping 2-4 pumps in my hands and work the cleanser around my dry face. I apply the milk to dry skin because it is an emollient, which helps to breakdown any dirt, oil or makeup that I have on my skin. Then I simply rinse the cleansing milk off with warm water and a shammy (a type of washcloth).

After cleansing my face, I apply a moisturizer. The moisturizers I use differs from day to night.  In the morning I use BiOxygene cream. I find that it provides my skin with hydration without being too heavy. I apply BiOxygene just before I put on my makeup.  It’s hydrating enough to give my makeup long staying power, and light enough to keep my makeup from slipping off my face.  Lastly, the smell of this cream is divine, very fresh and clean.
Because my skin has been recovering from the cold, to give it an added boost of nourishment, I have been apply Creme Nutrition Confort after I cleanse my skin at night.  This cream is filled with essential oils, such as, Lavender, Rosemary and Thyme.  These oils help repair and nourish very dry skin. This is a cream that I’m using to treat my dry skin, as the weather warms up and my skin balances out I may replace this moisturizer with BiOxygene, but for the time being this is a necessary product for me.

If anyone has any questions about any of the products I use, or if you are interested in having a skin consultation and facial, just stop by the spa, I’m always happy to meet new people.

I think that this service is one of the most beneficial services that we offer at Fountains Day Spa, because it just makes you feel good, and the results are immediate.

This wrap contains a potent mix of five French seaweeds including, Laminaria, Fucus, Ulva Lactuca, Spirulina and Sea Rocket submerging the body in pure marine actives to stimulate, firm and moisturize the skin of the body. The mud contains ingredients which offer vitamins, iron, iodine, amino acids, lecithin, essential fatty acids, and mucilage, aiding in the overall detoxification. These ingredients work to stimulate the thyroid, promote decongestion and waste elimination, improving skin smoothness, re-balanced, restores proper hydration, and prevents future skin damage by fighting free radicals.

Blackbaltic

After having this treatment your joints and skin feel dramatically different. The seaweed removes toxins from your body, which leaves you feeling rejuvenated and your skin looking amazing! I recommend having this on a regular basis if you are looking to begin a healthy routine. I personally have this service done once a month, and I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in my energy level.  Others may need to have this treatment done more frequently depending on activity level and personal goals.

I see many of my clients who have recognized the benefits of this treatment, and continually come back to have it done. I also see clients getting this wrap before going on a vacation, before military weight ins, and after a rigorous workout routine that has left them feeling achy and sore.

My favorite service to give is the Ultra Hydradermie Facial.  It does wonders for the skin!  I like to give this service because you get two amazing Guinot treatments in one.  The Ultra Hydradermie Facial offers the deep cleansing and deep hydration benefits from our regular Hydradermie as well as the relaxation and soothing effects from the aromatics facial.  This service can be customized to fit any skin concerns whether it be lack of hydration, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, or sensitive skin.

1

First we begin with the Galvanic Current which lightly penetrates serums with active ingredients deep into the skin.  Then we move into oxygenating the skin cells using high frequency, this also provides and antibacterial and antiseptic effect to heal the skin.  Now that we have all the deep cleansing finished we move into relaxation mode. I choose a blend of essential oils that suit your skin and continue with a long massage using gentle effleurage movements and pressure points. Next I transition into a lymphatic drainage massage to remove toxins from the facial area. Concluding the service with a plant extracts mask which is a custom-made cooling peel-off mask, blended with plant concentrates, is sure to have you leave with your skin glowing.

I find this facial to be the most relaxing and beneficial facials we offer, clients leave Fountains amazed with how their skin looks and feels. The Ultra Hydradermie Facial is a deluxe treatments, therefore I would receiving either a Hydradermie or Beaute Neuve Facial regularly and the Ultra Hydradermie every 2-3 months for a little indulgence.

Treatment Spotlight: Hydradermie Facial

The Basics to the Hydradermie Facial

Galvanic Current

The Hydradermie begins with a good cleansing and exfoliation, making the skin receptive to the benefits which follow. Next, depending on skin type, condition, and treatment goals, we apply customized treatment gels to the face, neck, and around the eye contourThe treatment gels target dryness, dehydration, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, and sensitive skin.

Galvanic Current is then applied to the skin, which initiates two processes known as Ionisation and Disincrustation.  The basic principles of Ionisation are that positive ions are attracted to negative ions, and during this phase, two soothing, electrically charged metal rollers glide over the skin, interacting with the treatment gels and resulting in a deeper and faster penetration of the active ingredients.  The action of the Galvanic Current also softens (disincrusts) blackheads and clogged pores, making extraction of these blackheads easier and more effective.

High Frequency

The next phase of the facial is the High Frequency phase, this helps to oxygenate the skin’s tissues and cells by stimulating circulation and eliminating toxins.  High Frequency is particularly effective in

  • Energizing skin cells that become sluggish with the aging process.
  • Accelerating the healing of blemishes as well as preventing the formation of new ones.

A cream known to us as “OZ-2” is applied to the face and neck.  The OZ-2 has a high concentration of lavender, which enhances the benefits of the High Frequency phase.  Although each phase of the Hydradermie contributes to that post-facial glow and radiance, I believe that the High Frequency phase contributes the most.

Massage & Mask

Next comes a relaxing massage of the neck, shoulders, and facial muscles followed by a facial mask.  In the Hydradermie each phase builds on the previous one, so as we enter the last phase, the skin is even more receptive to a final infusion.  We finish the Hydradermie with an application of a toning lotion to refine the skin’s texture, balance it’s pH, and prepare it for a moisturizer appropriate for the skin type providing additional softening, smoothing, protection and glow.

We would be delighted to answer questions you may have regarding the Hydradermie facial. For a brief video describing the Hydradermie treatment and demonstrating it’s equipment, please refer to the video below.

Who Should Not Get a Hydradermie Facial

The Hydradermie is appropriate for the vast majority of skin types and conditions and provides excellent long-lasting results.  That being said, there are a few circumstances which cause us to recommend other Guinot facials because the electric currents could be too stimulating or uncomfortable.   We generally refrain from performing the Hydradermie if any of the following conditions are present:

  • Pregnancy
  • A significant amount of metal pins or prostheses in the body
  • Pacemaker

Fun Fact: The Hydradermie was first introduced in 1965 and has been performed in every major city in the world for nearly 50 years.

Treatment Spotlight: Liftosome Facial

Ideal Skin Type: Clients looking to tighten their skin

Guest Blogger: Erin Ryan

One of my favorite facials to perform is the Liftosome Facial. This pro-collagen infused facial is a great pick-me-up for all age groups! Not only does it tighten and tone the face, it also brightens your complextion to give you an awesome glow! Even better, you’ll notice a difference after just one facial. I recommend this facial for someone who is getting ready for a special event, or someone who simply needs a little something to make them feel better.

The Liftosome starts out with an exfoliation using Guinot’s Gommage Biologique. Once dead skin cells are removed, a Pro-collagen concentrate in massaged into the skin.  This concentrate is made up with stabilized vitamin C to restore the skins elasticity. The Pro-collagen is kept on the skin while a Thermolift mask is applied on top.  This mask is amazing, and unlike any other that we offer!  It heats up on the skin to really help the pro-collagen penetrate deeper into the skin, providing you with great results. The mask has a luxurious smell to it, and can be applied over the eyes and mouth for maximum lift results, if desired.  Once the mask hardens, it is lifted off the face to reveal a tighter, toned and brightened complexion. The facial is finished with an Anti-Aging serum the contains Biopeptides to firm and smooth the skin.

This facial is great to book as a special-occasion facial or if you’re looking for a real head-turning results, I would strongly recommend combining the Liftosome Facial with The Lift Facial.  Together these facials will work on muscle tone and collagen production all in one! I am always getting feedback from clients who rave about their results and they keep coming back for more!

Product of the Week: Guinot Deo Epil Confort Line

For those of you who know me and know my obsession with deodorants (not anti-perspirants), I am thrilled to inform you that Guinot has now developed not one, but two deodorants. Both are effective and have added benefits in these products, which inhibit re-growth and greatly slow it down over time.

The two products I am speaking of are Guinot Deo Epil Smart (After Hair Removal Deodorant Spray) and Guinot Deo Crème Epil Smart (After Hair Removal Deodorant Cream). Both are anti re-growth deodorants that do not contain alcohol or aluminum salts.

Why I’m Anti Antiperspirants

The widespread use of antiperspirants is a huge concern of mine. I would like to point out to those of you who are not aware, the big differences between deodorants and antiperspirants. Antiperspirants contain small particles of aluminum, (deodorants do not).  Aluminum stops the body from perspiring. I like to compare it to putting a plug in the bathtub: when the plug is in, the water cannot escape. The same idea happens when you use your antiperspirant, you do not perspire.  This may sound like a good thing, however what is happening when you perspire is your body is removing uric acid that is in your perspiration. By not allowing the body to rid this acid through sweating, it will begin to build up and over time until the body finds another area of the body to send it to, eventually causing more congestion elsewhere.

Perspiration helps to regulate body temperature, as well as to eliminate uric acid.  Neither function can occur correctly when using an antiperspirant product. Many people are not even aware that they are using these damaging products on a daily basis. It is very important to read labels today, remember: no aluminum salts!

Deodorants work to mask body odor while allowing the body to function normally and naturally. This is an easy step to take towards living a healthier lifestyle. As we are all living longer these days it is better to be free from aluminum products as some studies now suggest that a build-up of aluminum in the body can contributes to Alzheimer’s.

I have noticed a great improvement with my clients who have chosen to switch from an antiperspirant to a deodorant. Some of the biggest differences I have seen are clearer skin with less break-outs (even on the chest and back). Another big difference I have seen and clients have shared with me is the disappearance of cellulite. It just makes sense, if you allow your body to eliminate toxins naturally, your body will pay back tenfold! Think about it.

Introducing Guinot’s Deodorant

Both of these products have a light pleasant fragrance and are easy to use. The Deo Epil Smart has a super concentrated formula, and comes in a small compact spray that dispenses the perfect amount of product. The packaging enables you to carry it with you and re-apply if needed on the go. This spray is effective in neutralizing the formation of body odor, and helps to control perspiration without blocking the body’s natural process.

The second deodorant product that Guinot has introduced is the “Deo” Cream Epil Smart. This cream incorporates all the benefits of the Epil Smart spray, but comes in a cream base. Just as with the spray, this cream accts directly on the hair room to slow hair regrowth.

The ingredient, Bulbaine is found in both of these products. Bulbaine is a patented complex, of plant and marine extract, when used on a daily basis; it helps to prolong the effects of hair removal (either waxing or shaving). Leaving the under arm skin clean and hair free for a longer period of time.

Most people are familiar with the term exfoliation, but are not aware of the many benefits it has or even how to use it to achieve the best results for their skin.

New skin cells are generated in the lower layer, the dermis. And over a period of about 30 days, these cells develop and mature as they move to the surface of the skin. At the end of their journey, they flatten out, die, and become saturated with keratin, which serves as a basic protection to the more delicate layers of the skin. There are several negative effects of this buildup of dead cells, and there are healthier, more esthetic methods of protection.  We always recommend some type of exfoliation routine, depending on individual skin conditions.

15% off Gommage Grain June 3ed – June 9th

15% off Gommage Grain
June 3rd – June 9th

What is Exfoliation and Why Should I Exfoliate?

This is the process of removing the dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface. The benefits of exfoliation include:

  • Minimizes clogged pores from oil and impurities, thereby minimizing breakouts
  • Results in softer, more radiant and glowing skin.
  • Increases the reproduction rate of skin cells
  • Allows moisturizers, serums, and other treatment creams to penetrate deeper into the skin
  • Creates a more even skin tone, preventing and minimizing the visible effects of sun damage (hyper pigmentation)
  • Exfoliation for men keeps the hair follicles clear which allows for a more effective and less irritating shave
  • Increases the skin’s metabolism, boosting circulation

How is Exfoliation Performed?

There are two basic methods of exfoliation: Mechanical Exfoliation and Chemical Exfoliation. Mechanical methods involve creating friction with some type of abrasive material. Chemical methods generally contain some type of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), beta hydroxy acids (BHA), or fruit enzymes, all of which act to loosen or dissolve the substance that holds the dead skin cells together (intercellular cement).

For most skin types, the in-home exfoliator that I recommend is Guinot’s Gommage Grain D’Eclat. It contains polyethylene micro-particles which provide gentle friction to smooth the skin while freeing the pores of dirt and impurities. Another key ingredient is jojoba micro spheres, which act to smooth, soften and moisturize.  For dry skin, I recommend doing a thorough exfoliation once a week; for oily or combination skin, twice per week.

How to use an exfoliator?

For best results, cleanse the skin and pat it dry. Apply a thin layer to the entire face and neck, avoiding the contour of the eyes. Let it sit on the face for about ten minutes. During this time, excess oil and impurities are absorbed by kaolin and the cream will begin to dry. Once it has completely dried, gently rub the cream with your fingers in circular motions over a sink. Allow the small particles to fall off your face and into the sink. Once most of the product has come off, rinse off any excess and follow with a toner/moisturizer.

Some things to keep in mind regarding exfoliation:

  • While many exfoliants on the market can dry and irritate the skin, Gommage Grain D’Eclat is gentle enough to ensure that these negative effects do not occur.
  • Avoid exfoliating while in the shower, because the exfoliating cream will not dry sufficiently for the necessary friction to occur.
  • Gommage Grain D’Eclat is appropriate for most skin types. For those with extremely sensitive skin, Gommage Biologique would be an excellent alternative. And for those with moderate to extreme acneic conditions, even gentle rubbing/friction is not recommended. For these conditions, the Pure Balance Mask is recommended.
  • After exfoliation, the skin is very receptive to the nourishing, hydrating, and stimulating ingredients of a facial mask. Applying a mask after exfoliating is a great way to enhance the effects of your exfoliator, giving the skin more radiance, glow, and energy!

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have regarding exfoliation or any other type of skin care issue.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the skin’s natural process for shedding dead skin cells is known as desquamation? This type of shedding however is uneven and incomplete, so we use exfoliation techniques to accelerate desquamation and give us optimal results!
